Social Impact Bonds: Learning from the U.K.

On May 9, 2011, PRI Makers Network and More for Mission co-sponsored a webinar featuring Emily Bolton, director of Social Finace Ltd. and Tracy Palandjian, CEO of Social Finance Inc.

Social impact bonds represent a contract with the public sector to pay for improved social outcomes, resulting in public sector savings. These bonds are a way to use non-grant capital to implement evidence-based prevention programs and catalyze systems change. Representatives of Social Finance, which created the first social impact bond to address recidivism at the Peterborough Prison, shared their experiences as context for the fast-moving efforts in the U.S. to develop social impact bonds.

Q&A from presentation

On the Road to CDFI Investing
On December 8, 2010, over 20 individuals participated in our webinar, On the Road to Investing with CDFIs, to learn how foundations utilize CDFI investments to support their missions and how CARS™, the CDFI Assessment and Ratings System, is a useful tool in that effort.

Are you considering investing in a particular CDFI? As part of our efforts to support Network members in their work with CDFIs, members currently have access to benefits and discounts from CARS™. See the list of currently rated CDFIs and those that are scheduled to be rated in 2011.

The Network is also working with CARS™ to further develop affordable access to CARS™ ratings reports for smaller foundations. One idea we are discussing is for the Network to purchase a discounted group subscription, enabling ten members to pay only $1,500 each to access CARS™ ratings reports for a CDFI loan fund of their choice during the 12-month subscription period. If your organization would be interested in participating in the group subscription in order to receive reports on a specific CDFI, please let us know.
